WJU Hits Past Shepherd, Moves to MEC Final

WHEELING, W.Va. – Wheeling Jesuit hit one of the top 15-best three-set matches in NCAA Division II this season and moved on to the Mountain East Conference Tournament Championship final with a 3-0 sweep of Shepherd University.

The top-seeded Cardinals (32-4) posted a .506 hitting percentage, the 15th best three-set percentage in the nation, and used long runs against the No. 5 seed Rams (16-17) with scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-13.

The WJU victory sets up the MEC Tournament Championship round three final. For the third year in a row, Wheeling Jesuit will battle Fairmont State for conference supremacy. No. 2 Fairmont State dispatched with No. 3 University of Charleston, 3-1, in the night's first semifinal.

The MEC Player of the Year Kayce Krucki led the home hitting with a match-high 11 kills without an error in 20 swings for a .550 attack percentage.

"Our motto every match is to start off strong. We played well as a team and we went from there," said Krucki.

The Cardinals started the night blasting 19 kills with one error over 28 attacks for a .643 opening-set hit percentage and set the match's tone.

WJU head coach Christy Benner added, "I knew we hit a high percentage, but not that high. Our passing in transition did really well, especially Jess Thobe."

Libero Jess Thobe dug a team-high 14 attacks and served up a pair of aces.

MEC All-Freshman middle blocker Lauran Graves downed eight kills and finished with a .727 hit percentage. Sydney Obringer smashed six kills in seven tries, all in the first set, as she helped WJU's fast start.

Emma Schleucher added six kills, three digs, two block assists, two assists and an ace in her all-around game.

On Saturday night, WJU will attempt for a three-match sweep of Fairmont State in the 2015 season. The Falcons (25-7) are 21-2 over their last 23 matches with the lone two defeats coming in 3-0 losses to the Cardinals on Oct. 13th and 24th.

"We expected them (Fairmont State) to be in the finals. They are a great team and tomorrow will be a high energy match," said Benner.

Krucki finished, "We are excited (for the match) with our fan base, our family and home crowd. It was a great time versus Fairmont State."
