Cardinals Take Care of Bobcats, Move to MEC Semis

WHEELING, W.Va. – After a five-set match before them, the Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team made quick work of West Virginia Wesleyan, 3-0, in the fourth and final match of the Mountain East Conference Quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Cardinals (31-4) posted the lone straight-sets win of the day with a 25-12, 25-10 and 25-12 win over the Bobcats (12-19).

No. 1 seed WJU moves on to face No. 5 Shepherd, which outlasted UVa-Wise in five sets 3-2 in the third match, at 7:30 p.m. Friday night. Both No. 3 University of Charleston (3-1 over West Liberty) and No. 2 Fairmont State (3-1 over Urbana) won as favorites and meet in the first semifinal at 5 p.m.

"We were able to come out strong at the beginning of the match and played with intensity and focus," said WJU head coach Christy Benner. "Our hitters were lights out tonight and we were playing our type of game."

The Cardinals top hitter was middle blocker Haley Kindall. The junior pounded 11 kills without an error in 19 attacks for a .579 hit percentage to go with three block assists.

"It's the time (of the season) we have to turn it up," said Kindall.

Sydney Obringer added eight kills and Emma Schleucher six kills. Emily Blank and Alexa Brown chipped in three and two kills, respectively.
