Cardinals Score Final 12 Points, Rally Past Scots

VIENNA, W.Va. – Trailing in all but one possession over the first 34 minutes, the Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball scored the final 12 points and rallied past Ohio Valley on the road Tuesday night, 78-74.

Senior Eric Siefert started the final comeback with a driving layup and netted the final three free throws for the Cardinals' third victory in as many games in the past four days.

"Ohio Valley played with more of a purpose than we did," pointed out WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We were fortunate to win the game. We have to execute better on both ends of the floor."

Pat Moseh paced WJU (3-0) with 19 despite only making 4-of-15 shots from the floor, but 11-of-11 free throws. The sophomore grabbed six rebounds and swiped four balls, including the one that sealed the victory with 3.8 seconds left in the game.

Siefert produced 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while he rounded out his effort with seven boards, six assists and four steals. Justin Fritts netted 15 points and pulled down four caroms.

Forward Haywood Highsmith kept WJU in the game. The second-year Cardinals' player scored all 15 of his tallies in the first half, while he had a team-high eight rebounds to go with four assists and three blocked shots.

WJU held a distinct advantage at the charity stripe. The Cardinals made 22-of-29 free throws while the Scots only attempted 14 in the game.

The Cardinals had to put together two rallies over the 40-minute game against the Fighting Scots (1-1).

Ohio Valley opened the night by putting the first seven points on the scoreboard. The home lead grew to as many as 15 points, 31-16, with 9:26 left in the opening half.

Trailing 40-30 with 4:13 in the first half, WJU finished the first 20 minutes on a 16-6 run and tied the contest, 46-46, by the half's buzzer.

The Scots worked their way to a 70-61 advantage with 9:27 remaining only to see the Cardinals respond down the stretch. After a Kyle Ritz jumper made it a six-point margin, Ohio Valley hit a turnaround jumper and pushed the score to 74-66 with 6:12.

The Cardinals did not give up another point. WJU recorded the final 12 points of the last six minutes of play for the win.

Wheeling Jesuit opens its home and Mountain East Conference schedule on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 21, in a 2 p.m. game against Urbana University.
