Siefert & Moseh Take Cardinals Past Panthers

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Eric Siefert and Pat Moseh guided Wheeling Jesuit past Virginia Union, 99-85, and helped complete a perfect weekend of action at the Shepherd Classic on Sunday.

The two All-Mountain East Conference performers from last season, Siefert and Moseh scored 31 of their 38 points in the first half and led the Cardinals (2-0) to a dominate first-half lead, 57-26, over the Panthers (0-2). The WJU lead grew to as many as 37 points, 88-51, with eight minutes left in the game, before it coasted home down the stretch.

"We played very well offensively today. We shared the ball extremely well and had great production from both our starters and off the bench," said Danny Sancomb, WJU's head coach. "Eric was outstanding at both ends – offensively and defensively, which is what we expect from him. Pat was great in transition and attacked the basket."

For the game, Siefert finished a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, including all four 3-point attempts for his 19 points, to go with two rebounds and two assists. Moseh knocked down 6-of-11 shots for his 19-point night, while he handed out five assists and grabbed three boards.

Inside, Haywood Highsmith and Kyle Ritz chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. The two forwards combined for 13 rebounds.

Justin Fritts added a pair of 3-pointers as part of his 14 points and Chase Lawson contributed eight points with his own two triples off the bench.

The Cardinals made 32-of-52 attempts for the contest for a 61.5-percent clip with 10 treys.

Trailing 6-4 after 3:33 into the game, WJU went on the 12-0 game-deciding run over the next two minutes. Moseh started the Cardinal run with a pair of buckets and Siefert accounted for the other eight points, including back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 16-6.

The Cardinal advantage continued to grow. At 4:55, Moseh connected on a free throw for a 39-19 score. Siefert added a foul shot of his own with two seconds left for the 57-26 halftime score. The two WJU high-scorers went 10-of-14 for 31 points in the opening 20 minutes.

WJU did not let up on the throttle in the second stanza. The difference increased to a game-high 37 points, 88-51, on three Fritts free throws.

Virgina Union's Kory Cooley and Tavon Mealy scored a combined 36 second-half points, but they were unable to get their team any closer than the 99-85 final score.

Wheeling Jesuit continues on the road Tuesday night, Nov. 17, for a 7:30 p.m. game at Ohio Valley.
