WJU VB Celebrates ‘Senior Day’ with Third Perfect MEC Season, Coach Benner’s Win No. 450

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team's 'Senior Day' could not have finished any better. The Cardinals took care of the University of Charleston, 3-0, and completed their third-straight perfect Mountain East Conference regular season. WJU added a 3-0 sweep of Cedarville College to give head coach Christy Benner her 450th-coaching victory.

WJU (30-4) started the early afternoon match against Charleston (19-10) by scores of 25-10, 25-23 and 25-16 to end the MEC season at 16-0 for the third year in a row and a perfect 48-0 in the three seasons of the conference's existence. The Cardinals were able to bite the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville 3-0 (25-15, 25-17 and 25-14) in the late afternoon contest to give coach Benner her 450th win in only 564 career matches at the WJU helm.

After winning the MEC regular season, Wheeling Jesuit will now play host to the league tournament next Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 19-21. The No. 1-seed Cardinals open against the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan next Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.

The Cardinal three seniors – Jessica Thobe, Emily Blank and Alexa Brown – played their final regular season home matches. Thobe dug 42 attacks in her Saturday performance. Blank killed the final two points against Cedarville and registered four kills in the two matches. Brown chipped in two set assists.

Maddy Smyth paced the Cardinals against the Golden Eagles in the first match with 11 kills and no errors in 21 attacks for a season-best.524 hitting percentage. Haley Kindall posted top honors against Cedarville with 13 kills without an error in 22 attacks for a .591 attack percentage.
