Fritts’ Back-to-Back Triples Seals Cardinals Season-Opening Win

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Justin Fritts' back-to-back 3-pointers sealed the Wheeling Jesuit season-opening men's basketball win over Clarion University, 90-78, at the Shepherd Classic Tournament on Saturday evening.

After the Golden Eagles (0-1) cut the margin to the lowest of the second half, Fritts drained a pair of triples in 34 seconds and helped the Cardinals (1-0) equal their biggest lead, 86-71, with 4:03 left in the game.

"It was a good team effort. We shared the ball well and did a great job of making the extra pass," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We received great contributions off the bench from Fritts, Dominique Tham and Chase Lawson. Although, we need to continue to get better defensively."

Fritts, not only paced the WJU offense with 18 points, but led a Cardinal bench, which totaled 46 of the team's 90 points. The senior guard finished 6-for-10 shooting, including hitting 4-of-5 from long-range.

Lawson and Tham were right behind Fritts in the scoring column with 15 and 13 points, respectively. Lawson hit a pair of 3-pointers and dished a team-high six assists. In his first collegiate contest, Tham made 6-of-9 attempts and grabbed six rebounds.

Pat Moseh led the WJU starters with 10 points, seven boards and five assists. Kyle Ritz and Eric Siefert chipped in nine tallies apiece, while Drake Goddard and Haywood Highsmith both had eight points.

Tied at 13 seven minutes into the game, Lawson led a key 10-0 WJU run. Lawson made all three free throws after he was fouled and added a trey in the two-minute sport for a 23-13 advantage.

Tham laid the ball in for a layup with 29 seconds to give the Cardinals a 45-34 halftime lead over the Golden Eagles.

At 13:35 remaining in the second half, Siefert hit a jumper for the Cardinals' largest lead of 15 points, 60-45.

Clarion's Larry Johnson, Jr., converted a 3-point play and cut the lead to nine points, 80-71, at 5:18 on the clock. Fritts answered with his two 3-pointers and sealed the WJU win.

The Golden Eagles' Andre Anthony led all scorers with 20 points.

Wheeling Jesuit wraps up its opening weekend at the Shepherd Classic on Sunday. WJU faces Virginia Union in a 4 p.m. tip-off.
