Bobcats Slip Past Cardinals in Soggy Match

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – In a wet and soggy match, West Virginia netted a 21st-minute goal and held Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team off the scoreboard for the 1-0 Friday final.

Only a minute after the Cardinals' Brent Pedlow's shot on goal was saved, Paul Smith knocked in a rebound off the post for the Bobcats' lone goal at 20:44.

"We lack that cutting edge inside the box. Now, we have a huge task ahead of us to get this slump turned around," said WJU head coach James Regan.

For WJU (5-6-1/3-4 Mountain East Conference), Aitor de Heredia saw his kick saved with 5:15 remaining in the first half. Daniel Undreiner had the third and final shot attempt on
goal, before de Heredia blasted a shot high in the 88th minute in the Cardinals' final attack.

It was the third consecutive match the Cardinals failed to put the ball into the net since upsetting then No. 1 University of Charleston.

WJU goalie Mathew McCormick snatched seven saves including batting away a West Virginia Wesleyan penalty kick.

WJU will have almost a week until it has a road rematch at Concord Thursday, Oct. 15. The match will kickoff at 4 p.m.
