De Heredia Score Takes WJU over Pitt-Johnstown

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – After winning in the final minute the last two matches, Aitor de Heredia scored the second goal and the Wheeling Jesuit defense held off Pitt-Johnstown for the 2-1 men's soccer victory Saturday afternoon.

The Cardinals (4-1-1) found the net one time in each half. Brent Pedlow finished a cross in the box at 23:54 for the lead. De Heredia added the second goal in the 67th minute to make it 2-0.

The Mountain Cats (0-6) cut the margin in half, 2-1, at 77:17 on a rebound, as the home team took advantage of being a man-up following a Cardinal red card. WJU, though, did not allow another goal through its line for the victory.

"We were physically tired after coming off a hard-fought conference win Thursday. The guys looked tired and sluggish as we missed a few good early chances, but our pressure was rewarded and we jumped out to a two-goal advantage," stressed Cardinal head coach James Regan.

WJU attempted 19 shots with 13 being put on goal. Trey Tucker, who assisted on Pedlow's goal fired four shots on goal. Yafu Rougier passed to de Heredia to assist on the second Cardinal goal and he had two shots of his own on goal.

Cardinal goalie Mathew McCormick stopped two UPJ shots and he was credited with a secondary assist on the first WJU goal. UPJ tried 12 shots for the day.

Wheeling Jesuit aims for a third victory in a row when it travels to battle No. 7 Notre Dame College on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 4 p.m.
