Del Rio Boots WJU Past No. 3 Charleston in 2OT

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Manuel Del Rio helped Wheeling Jesuit recorded an encore winning performance against the Mountain East Conference's top team and No. 3 University of Charleston. Del Rio booted a looping left-footed 25-yard shot into the upper left corner of the goal for the Cardinals' 2-1 double overtime upset of the Golden Eagles.

The WJU (10-7-1/7-5 MEC) victory gave it the season sweep over No. 3 Charleston (15-2/10-2) and the MEC rival program's second loss of the year. The Cardinal win was
their fourth over a NCAA Division II Top 25-ranked team this season.

"It was a massive win for us! From guy one through 22 on the trip with us, the guys rose to the occasion today," pointed out WJU head coach James Regan. In overtime, we said we were not leaving here with a tie, so we went for it. It was a great goal by Manny. We can't ask for anything more from our team."

In the 104th minute, Del Rio gathered in a pass from the middle of the field on the right wing. The sophomore from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico turned to the middle and blasted the 25-yard curving game-winner, his second one of the year, into the left side of the net.

Late in the second half, the Golden Eagles broke through with the first score of the game off the foot of Will Roberts at 74:20.

Less than six minutes later, the Cardinal offense would strike and tie the match on their first shot on goal of the match. Sophomore Trey Tucker headed the ball into the net for the tie, 1-1, at the 79:57 mark.

"The kids didn't put their heads down, then Charleston scored and we were able to tie the match right after it," noted Regan.

With the win, WJU took round two of what will be the most important match of the season. The No. 4-seeded Cardinals travel right back to Charleston to again face the MEC regular season champion Golden Eagles on Wednesday night, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. in the MEC semifinals.

In the match, WJU freshman goalie Tyler Shotwell saved 13 of 14 shots on goal in his first collegiate start. Charleston
out shot WJU, 29-3, in the match.
