Cardinals’ Magic Runs Out, Falls to No. 6 Charleston in MEC Semis

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – After having its number in the first two upsets including last Saturday afternoon, the Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer magic over No. 6 University of Charleston ran out Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles were relentless and finished a solid Cardinal season in the 6-0 final.
 
WJU (10-8-1) shut out Charleston (16-2), 2-0, in Wheeling on Sept. 30 and claimed a 2-1 double overtime road win in the series last Saturday. In a scoreless match, the ball bounced off a Cardinal defender into the net for an own goal at 28:46 and it was downhill from that point for the visitors.
 
The Golden Eagles added a second goal 40 seconds into the second half and found the back of the net four more times in the final 44 minutes for the going away win.
 
"The season caught up with us! We couldn't produce the same energy level a third time," admitted WJU head coach James Regan. "Our senior class should be proud of the late season run and knocking off four nationally-ranked teams."
 
WJU shut out three nationally-ranked teams in Charleston, Urbana and Millersville, the top three teams in this week's regionalrankings, while it added last weekend's second Charleston win to an impressive late-season resume.
 
With the loss, WJU saw its seniors – Aitor de Heredia, Sean Murphy, J.J. Hawkshaw, Vince Faraji, DominickPalmeiri and Ryan McCann – wear the Red & Gold for the final time.
 
Murphy had half of WJU's four shots with de Heredia and McCann attempted the other ones. The Charleston defense did not allow a shot on goal in the match.
 
Cardinal goalies Mathew McCormick and Tyler Shotwell both registered two saves in net.
