Cardinal Volleyball Fends off Cavaliers

WISE, Va. – After grinding through and splitting the opening two sets, the Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team was able to swing momentum in its favor and defeat The University of Virginia's College at Wise, 3-1, Friday night.

The No. 7 Cardinals (25-3/12-0 Mountain East Conference) took the opening set, 25-20, before the Cavaliers (14-12/9-2 MEC) grabbed the second set, 25-23. WJU rallied in a big way behind Emma
Schleucher's six-kill third set (25-15) and Lauran Graves and Kayce Krucki's combined 10 fourth set kills (25-9).

"UVa-Wise was ready to play and focused. We just couldn't catch a break and our passing didn't pick up until halfway in the third set," pointed out WJU head coach Christy Benner. "I was happy to bounce back in the final two sets and started to play well in the fourth."

Schleucher and Graves pounded out 14 kills
apiece, while Krucki and Haley Kindall lined 13 kills each. All three of Schleucher (14 kills/10 digs), Krucki (13 kills/16 digs) and Andrea Thobe (55 assists/10 digs) posted double-doubles, while Kindall missed by one block assist (13 kills/9 block assists).

The WJU second-set loss was its first set lost in the last 33 MEC matches dating back to a 3-1 win over Fairmont State on Nov. 16, 2013. UVa-Wise became only the second MEC-member school to take a set in 52 league matches spanning the three-year conference history.

WJU has the week off until it travels for a 7 p.m. match next Friday, Nov. 6, at Urbana University.

The host
Cavalivers downed three-late kills in a row for a 23-20 score. A Graves and Maddy Smyth tandem block helped the Cardinals cut the margin to 24-23, but dropped the next point and the second set, 25-23.
