Cardinals Blank Blue Knights

URBANA, Ohio. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team picked up a Mountain East Conference road victory as they shut out Urbana University, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon. Urbana defeated the Cardinals in the previous matchup, 3-2, in Wheeling earlier this season.

WJU (4-11-2, 4-9-2 MEC) converted the lone score of the match at 49:44 when Emily Hartley found the back of the net off a pass from Nikki Hillard. Urbana (6-11, 5-10 MEC) recorded 17 shots but was unable to connect on a score.

"We had really tough weather conditions to play in today," WJU head coach Tyler Absalom stressed. "We had a game plan that we executed brilliantly, especially in the second half. We were able to finish a great goal and get the result we needed."

The two teams played to a deadlock in the first half. WJU finished the half with eight shots, while Urbana tallied six. The Cardinals recorded four of their eight first half shots in a seven minute stretch.

Hartley saw a shot miss wide at 22:01, while Meghan Horan had a shot saved less than a minute later. Hillard missed wide with a shot in the 26th minute, and Natalie Indermuhle had a shot saved at 29:37.

WJU was able to convert on a score less than five minutes into the second half of play when Hartley scored her second goal of the season.

The Cardinal defense was able to turn away 11 second half Blue Knight shots. Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Thompson faced 17 shots on the afternoon and finished with six saves. Thompson recorded her second shutout in the last three matches.

Hartley finished the match with a team high three shots. Kristen Garland and Gabby Burchett added two shots to the Cardinal total. Morgan Jacobson and Jenny Sogaard-Andersen each recorded a shot.

The Cardinals return to action when they travel to Charleston University on Saturday, October 31.
