Cardinals’ Late-Flurry Falls Short Against Golden Eagles

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In the final 20 minutes of action, Wheeling Jesuit finished its season with one final flurry of scoring attempts, but fell short against host University of Charleston, 1-0, Saturday evening.

After only amounting one shot on goal in first 69 minutes, the Cardinals (4-12-2/4-10-2 Mountain East Conference) saw Natalie
Intermuhle (70:13), Morgan Jacobson (73:36) and one last shot on goal from Sydney Lavengood with 3:42 left in the match all be saved by the Golden Eagle keeper.

Charleston (10-3-5/9-3-4 MEC) received its lone goal of the match off Erica Lemmert's foot at 80:39 to break a scoreless tie.

"It hurts not to win our last game, but we put forth a good effort," said Cardinal head coach Tyler Absalom. "I thank our seniors for all they have done and look forward to building on the successes we've had this fall in the offseason."

The Cardinals had five seniors – Holly Kraus, MeMe Earnest, Kristin Eaton, Maria Tennant and Kylee Macura – put on their uniforms for the final time Saturday.

Freshman Gabby Burchett fired the fourth and other WJU shot on goal. Her shot came at 31:04, the lone one in the first half.

WJU goalie Hannah Thompson saved nine Charleston shots on goal.

The Cardinals showed a great improvement for the season. WJU went from a 1-9-6 mark last fall to a 4-12-2 record in 2015.
