Pedlow Punches WJU’s MEC Playoff Ticket, Upset No. 23 Urbana

URBANA, Ohio – Striker Brent Pedlow booted a pair of goals and punched Wheeling Jesuit's Mountain East Conference men's soccer playoff ticket. Off Pedlow's foot, the Cardinals recorded a road upset of the No. 23 ranked Blue Knights of Urbana University, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon.

The WJU (9-7-1/6-5 MEC) upset was its third of a top 25-ranked team and second in two weeks. The Cardinals' clinched their third-straight MEC playoff spot as their victory gave them 18 points with
one-league match remaining while West Virginia Wesleyan has 16 points without a MEC match left. The WJU win also evened the season series versus Urbana, which claimed a 4-0 victory in Wheeling on Oct. 3.

"It was a great team win on the road against a nationally-ranked team," said WJU head coach James Regan. "I'm happy for our seniors (for us clinching the playoff spot). The senior leadership stepped up today and inspired the team to victory."

Pedlow helped Wheeling Jesuit play from ahead for almost the entire match. With only 7:42 off the first-half clock, the junior from Glen Innes, Australia hit his fifth goal of the year for a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Knights (10-3-2/7-3-1 MEC) put one shot on goal after the Pedlow goal and another (51:17), before they committed a foul in the penalty box. The Cardinals' Aitor Iniguez de Heredia's penalty kick attempt was saved, but Pedlow rushed to tap in the rebound (53:59) for the 2-0 advantage.

WJU goalie Mathew McCormick had the answer for each of the final four Urbana shots on goal, including two in the final 12 minutes. McCormick finished with six saves and posted his fourth shutout of the year.

Wheeling Jesuit finishes its regular season Saturday, Oct. 31, at No. 3
University of Charleston in a 4 p.m. match.
