Paiva’s Two Goals Propels NDC Past WJU

WHEELING, W.Va. – Following a midweek non-conference upset, the Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team were unable to make it two successful results Sunday afternoon. Notre Dame College's Leonardo Paiva netted two goals as his team posted a 3-0 victory over WJU on 'Senior Day' Sunday.

For the opening 42 minutes, the Cardinals (8-7-1/5-5 Mountain East Conference) and the Falcons (11-5/7-4 MEC) played an even match until Leonardo Paiva dribbled a couple times and belted the first of his two goals at 42:38. The Brazilian added a second score only 12:22 into the second half.

The Cardinals honored eight senior players – Aitor Iniguez de Heredia, JJ Hawkshaw, Sean Murphy, Matt Natal, Ryan McCann, Vince Faraji, Tom Walsh and Dominick
Palmeiri – before the match for their contributions to the program.

In a scoreless match, Micah
Tatebe saw his breakaway shot attempt saved (34:07) on a nice play by the Notre Dame keeper. Tatebe came right back with a second shot that flew just high at 37:23. The shot sequence proved to be WJU's last ones, before the Notre Dame first goal.

The Falcons
edge the Cardinals in shot attempts, 11-7. WJU goalie Mathew McCormick registered six saves.

WJU continues its drive for
a MEC playoff spot on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 28, at No. 20 Urbana. The match has a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
