Cardinals Take Down MEC Rival Hilltoppers

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team took revenge on Mountain East Conference rival West Liberty on Thursday night. The Cardinals took down the Hilltoppers, 2-0, by scoring one goal in each half of play.

WJU (3-10-2, 3-8-2 MEC) opened the scoring when Nikki Hillard scored in the 39th minute. Emily Hartley recorded the second Cardinal goal at 80:37. West Liberty (3-8-4, 3-6-4 MEC) was unable to convert on its six shots in the match.

"I was proud of our effort on both sides of the ball tonight," WJU head women's soccer coach Tyler Absalom stated. "We played our brand of soccer consistently for 90 minutes and got the result we were looking for."

As the first half came to a close, Hillard received a pass from Hartley and finished off a goal into the bottom right hand corner of the net. WJU took a 1-0 lead into the half.

Hartley recorded an insurance goal for WJU late in the second half as she controlled a loose ball and scored past the diving goalkeeper.

The WJU defense was able to deny all West Liberty opportunities. Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Thompson turned away every Hilltopper attempt and finished with three saves.

WJU posted four shots in each half of play. Meghan Horan tallied two shots, while Natalie Indermuhle, Gabby Burchett, and Kristin Eaton added one shot apiece. Hillards' lone shot of the evening resulted in the game-winning goal. Hartley finished the night with a goal and an assist.

The Cardinals will look to make it two wins in a row when they host Notre Dame College on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 3:30 p.m. WJU will honor its five senior women's soccer players at the event.
