Undreiner Goal and Tough Defense Helps WJU Shut out No. 14 Millersville

WHEELING, W.Va. – For the second time this fall, the Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team pulled off a home upset of a nationally-ranked opponent. In the 21st minute, Daniel Undreiner booted the match's lone goal and the Cardinal defense took over from there and shut out, 1-0, No. 14 Millersville Wednesday night.

On the lone WJU shot of the first 45 minutes, Jordan Frommeyer made a behind-the-back heel pass from the right wing to a cutting Undreiner, who buried the ball into the right side of the net for the goal at 20:06. The Cardinal defense punctuated by a sprawling save by keeper Mathew McCormick with 8:41 left in the match kept the Marauders (11-2-1) off the scoreboard for the shutout.

"We knew they played a
high pressure direct style. We knew we would be under pressure, but we would get a chance and we capitalized on one of them," said WJU head coach James Regan. "I am proud of the way we dug in and ground out a result."

The WJU win was its third-straight result and improved to 8-6-1 on the year.

Goalie McCormick finished the match with five saves for his third shutout of the year.

Millersville won the battle on shots, 13-2, and corner kicks, 10-0, but not the battle on the scoreboard.

With its third consecutive victory, WJU heads into Sunday's 'Senior Day' match against Notre Dame with some momentum. The Cardinals and Falcons start their match at 1 p.m.
