Rams Rally Past Cardinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team dropped a Mountain East Conference match against Shepherd University, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon. Shepherd rallied to score three second half goals after falling behind 1-0 against WJU in the first period.

The Cardinals (2-10-2, 2-8-2 MEC) struck first when Jenny Sogaard-Andersen finished off a goal in traffic in front of the net. The Rams (7-6-2, 6-5-2 MEC) responded with three goals in the second half of play.

"It was a tale of two halves today," WJU head women's soccer coach Tyler Absalom stressed. "We looked energetic and dangerously smart in the first half, and the opposite in the second. The second-half performance hurts."

Freshman Gabby Burchett fed Sogaard-Andersen a pass amongst traffic in the 17th minute of action to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. WJU hung on to its lead until Samantha Leonard found the back of the net at 62:47, tying the match at one.

The Rams took the lead eight minutes later, when Kylie Duffin finished off a goal into the bottom right of the net. Shepherd went on to collect its third goal of the game in the 83rd minute and clung to a 3-1 victory.

Sogaard-Andersen recorded two total shots in the game. Kristen Garland and Cheyenne Kuncher each added a shot to the Cardinal total.

Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Thompson recorded 11 saves on the afternoon.

The Cardinals return to action on Thursday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m. when they host rival West Liberty.
