WJU Women’s Soccer Drops Close Match at Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team fell to the Mountain Lions of Concord University on Thursday, 3-2. Concord (4-6-4, 3-6-3 Mountain East Conference) scored two goals within an eight-minute stretch early in the second half to take a 3-1 lead over WJU (2-9-2, 2-7-2 MEC).

"We outshot and outplayed them for 90 minutes. They were better at executing their chances when it matters," WJU head women's soccer coach Tyler Absalom expressed. "We just need to dig deeper."

The Mountain Lions struck first off the foot of Pilar Elias at 27:18. The two teams battled back and forth until WJU sophomore forward Jenny Sogaard-Andersen headed in a corner kick off the foot of Meghan Horan in the 43rd minute of play.

The two teams headed into the half tied at one. WJU outshot Concord 11-7 in the first half of play.

The Cardinals opened the second-half of play with a slew of opportunities. Sogaard-Andersen missed high with a shot 10 seconds into the second half. Sydney Lavengood saw a shot miss wide at 48:15 while Sogaard-Andersen had a shot saved just seconds later.

?The Mountain Lions were able to deny these scoring opportunities and scored a goal of their own seven minutes later. Micharae Thompson found the lower left-hand corner of the net in the 55th minute to give Concord a 2-1 lead. Less than eight minutes after, Concord finished off its third score of the game.

WJU was not done fighting yet. Nikki Hillard recorded two shots on goal in a 10 minute stretch before Meghan Horan capitalized on a penalty shot. Horan's third goal of the season brought the Cardinals to within one goal of the Mountain Lions.

Concord held on to deny further WJU opportunities and won the match, 3-2, over Wheeling Jesuit.

Hillard led WJU with six shots and four shots on goal in the match. Horan recorded four shots, two shots on goal, and one assist to go along with her score in the match. Sogaard-Andersen and Lavengood each contributed three shots, while Cheyenne Kuncher and Natalie Indermuhle added two shots of their own.
