Cardinals Tally Three Goals, Take Down Mt. Lions

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Cardinal men's soccer team snapped its scoring drought in a big way Thursday afternoon. Wheeling Jesuit scored twice in the opening 21 minutes of action and took down host Concord, 3-1, in Mountain East Conference action.

Brent Pedlow headed the first score at 12:47 and Vince Faraji tapped home the game-winner as the clock turned to the 21st minute for a 2-0 WJU (6-6-1) lead. Concord (3-10/2-8 MEC) scored its lone goal with 25:29 elapsed from the clock, but it was unable to add to it. Aitor de Heredia booted a 40-plus yard goal in the final second for the 3-1 final.

"We found our shooting boots. We came out strong with an attacking formation, knowing we had to win to keep our playoff hopes alive," pointed out WJU head coach James Regan. "The pressure paid off as we jumped out to a 2-0 lead. We gave Concord some life as they struck before the half. We played consistently the second half and put the icing on the cake with Aitor scoring on the last kick of the game!"

The WJU victory snapped a three-match losing streak and it evened the team's MEC record to 4-4, one game behind fourth-place Notre Dame College.

The Pedlow header off a de Heredia corner kick netted the first goal since shutting out then No. 1 University of Charleston, 2-0, on Sept. 30 and broke a three-match scoreless run.

WJU outshot Concord 16-4 in the match, including a 9-1 margin in the second half.

WJU returns home to face Shepherd University on Sunday, Oct. 18, starting at 1 p.m.
