Falcons Score Twice to Defeat Cardinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team was defeated by Fairmont State, 2-1, on Sunday. The Cardinals (2-8-2, 2-6-2 Mountain East Conference) tied the match in the 43rd minute before the Falcons (2-10-1, 2-8-1) netted the game winning goal late in the second period.

"We are having trouble executing in the final third of the field. We were in control of the match for long portions yet somehow found a way to lose," women's soccer head coach Tyler Absalom stressed.

Fairmont State began the scoring with a goal at 19:01. Courtney Webb fired a quick shot after WJU was called for a foul just outside of the box.

The Cardinals responded to the first Falcon score when freshman Gabby Burchett received a pass from Meghan Horan and finished off the goal.

The match was tied at one heading into the half. WJU outshot Fairmont State 12-4 in the first period.

WJU continued its intense attack in the second period. Nikki Hillard fired a shot at 47:41 that missed just right of the net. Jenny Sogaard-Andersen lofted a shot in the 87th minute that floated just over the net. The Cardinals could not convert on their eight second-half shots.

The Falcons tallied their second goal of the match at 72:15 when Courtney Webb scored her second goal of the day. Webb curved a shot from the left side of the field into the top right of the net to give Fairmont State a 2-1 lead.

Hillard led the Cardinals with six shots in the match. Sogaard-Andersen added three shots to the WJU attack while Sydney Lavengood, Cheyenne Kuncher, Sara Blasiman, and Meghan Horan each added two shots of their own.

The Cardinals return to action when they travel to Concord University on Thursday, October 15.
