WJU Captures Pair of Straight-Set Wins over Concord and West Liberty

WHEELING, W.Va. – In back-to-back matches, Wheeling Jesuit remained undefeated in Mountain East Conference play with a pair of straight-set wins over Concord and West Liberty Thursday.

The No. 7 Cardinals (16-3/4-0 MEC) ran their win streak to 11 matches, all by 3-0 scores. WJU swept past Concord (2-17/1-2 MEC) with scores of 25-15, 25-14, 25-14. The home squad finished the night with a 3-0 tally over West Liberty (9-9/2-1 MEC) in sets of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-15.
 
Over the six sets, WJU posted a .389 team hitting percentage – 98 kills with 17 errors in 209 total attacks.
 
Freshman middle blocker Lauran Graves had her way in the two matches. Graves totaled 16 kills without an error in 23 attacks for a .696 hitting percentage. She added four total blocks and two aces.
 
Maddy Smyth led WJU with 11 kills against Concord, while freshmen Sydney Obringer and Allegra Shippy pounded eight kills apiece. Against West Liberty, Haley Kindall smashed 13 kills without an error in 18 attacks and combined for three block assists.
 
Wheeling Jesuit travels to Wingate, N.C. for a pair of Saturday matches. WJU faces Queens College at 2 p.m., before it takes on host Wingate starting at 5 p.m.

In the sets…
For the first set, WJU opened an early 9-2 lead, but Concord battled back to pull to within five points, 15-10. The Cardinals outscored the Mountain Lions, 10-5, the rest of the set.
 
Abby Moffit and Sam Obringer combined to serve 13 times to help WJU take a 14-3 lead. Concord made it within nine points, before the 25-14 second set final.
 
For the third time, WJU went out to an early lead, 7-2. The Cardinals coasted home to complete the sweep, 25-14.

In the sets…
Tied at 4 in the first set, WJU's Emma Schleucher laced an ace and downed a kill as part of four-straight points and an overall 9-1 run. The Toppers never rebounded to closer than seven points until the Cardinals' 25-16 final.
 
In each of the next two sets, the Cardinals held a 9-6 lead when the Toppers called a timeout. WJU worked the margin to 17-10 scores and 25-15 finals in both the second and third sets for the match sweep.
