Fairmont State Downs Wheeling Jesuit Women’s Basketball 87-79

Box Score Wheeling, W.Va. – The Jesuit Women's Basketball team (6-3 overall, 3-2 MEC), coming off two big road wins, hosted the Falcons of Fairmont State (10-2 overall, 4-2 MEC) Tuesday night in the McDonough Center.

Two three pointers by sophomore guard Kylie Frizell in the first five minutes of the first half got Wheeling Jesuit out to a 10-3 lead.  At 15:15 a technical foul on junior guard Jaila Bryant following a dead ball foul resulted in Fairmont State taking the lead back at 11-10.

With the game tied at 16, junior forward Taylor Lubinsky hit a three pointer and a jumper on two successive trips down the court to put the Cardinals up by five points, prompting a Falcons' timeout.

Following the timeout, a Kiarra Kamarec layup and two three pointers by freshman guard Mariah Callen sent Jesuit out to a 29-18 lead.

The teams traded blows the rest of the half.  With three seconds left, Fairmont State hit a running one hand shot for three and Jesuit took a four point lead into the half, 40-36.

Lubinsky led the Cardinals in the first half hitting 5 of 6 from the field and one three pointer for 11 total points.  She also added four rebounds.

Jesuit outshot Fairmont State 51.5% to 43.3% from the field in the first half.  The Cardinals also outshot the Falcons from beyond the arc 45.5% to 31.3%.

The Falcons closed the gap to tie the game at 42 with just 2:15 elapsed in the second half.

At 14:45, Fairmont State's Emily Lohr hit a layup and connected on the foul shot she was awarded to put Fairmont State ahead 49-46.

The Cardinals then connected on a layup by sophomore forward Jaana Motton, two foul shots by freshman guard Cassi Stein, and a put back after a miss by Lubinsky to regain the lead 52-51.

Fairmont State's Emily Puskarich hit two three point shots, before and after two foul shots made by WJU's Taylor Lubinsky, to put the Falcons back ahead 57-56.  After Kiarra Kamarec regained the lead for the Cardinals 58-57 on a layup, Fairmont State came right back down the court and Puskarich again drained a three pointer to put the Falcons back up 60-58.

Down the stretch, the Cardinals could not dowse the Falcons' red-hot 3 point shooting.  Pushkarich and Lohr combined to hit three three pointers that proved to be the deciding factor in the game.  Lohr finished the game 4 of 9 from three point range.  Pushkarich finished the game 7 of 12 from beyond the arc.  Both players finished the game with 22 total points for the visiting Falcons.

Bryant and Lubinsky both had 17 points for the Cardinals, followed closely by freshman guard Mariah Callen, who had 16 points in the loss.

The 87-79 decision drops the Cardinals' overall record to 6-4 and 3-3 in the Mountain East Conference.  Jesuit Women's Basketball returns to action when they host Glenville State this Saturday January 10th at 2pm.
