Jesuit Women’s Basketball Defeats Notre Dame College 55-49 for 10th Win

Box Score Wheeling, W.Va. – Jesuit Women's Basketball hosted the Falcons of Notre Dame in the McDonough Center on Saturday.  Jesuit beat Notre Dame 55-49 for their 10th win of the 2014-15 season.

Play was even in the first half with Wheeling Jesuit taking a 23-22 lead into the intermission.  The Cardinals were led by junior guard Breanna Butler.  Butler had 10 points in 20 minutes of play in the first half.

Play went back and forth in the second half.  Notre Dame emerged with 5 minutes to play, to go ahead by 7 points.  But a running one hand shot by junior guard Jaila Bryant got it within 5 and the next trip down the court Butler hit a 10 foot jumper to pull within 3.  The Cardinals made foul shots after two consecutive unsuccessful Notre Dame trips down the court and the game was tied at 46-46.

Bryant broke the tie with a 2 pointer at the top of the key to put Jesuit ahead 48-46.  Notre Dame missed on its next two trips down the court.   On the second miss, junior forward Jaana Motton was fouled on the rebound and made 1 of 2 foul shots to put Jesuit ahead by 3, 49-46.

On the next possession, Notre Dame's Alyssa Kraus took a three pointer but missed with 1:00 left to play.  Bryant was fouled on the rebound and made both foul shots to put the Cardinals up 51-46 with 43 seconds to play.

Notre Dame's Ciara Reed hit a three-pointer with 36 seconds left to pull the Falcons within 2 points, 51-49.  On the inbounds, Jesuit broke Notre Dame's full court press and Butler was fouled at :24.3.  Butler hit both foul shots to put the Cardinals up by four, 53-49.

Notre Dame missed their final three-point attempt of the game before freshman guard Mariah Callen was fouled.  Callen hit both fouls shots and when the buzzer sounded the Cardinals came away victorious 55-49.

"We had a great defensive effort today, holding a very good Notre Dame team to 49 points.  Jaila Bryant and Bre Butler were huge for us today.  Jaila's shot when we were down by 7 kept the game manageable for us down the stretch.  Bre's 10-footer pulled us to within one possession.  I am proud of the way they responded to the challenge at the end of the game.  Their play propelled us to the win," stated Head Coach Deb Buff.

The victory moves Wheeling Jesuit's overall record to 10-5 and 7-4 in the Mountain East Conference.  WJU returns to action on Thursday January 29th when they travel to Urbana University for another Mountain East Conference matchup.
