Box Score Wheeling, W.Va. – On one day's rest, the Jesuit Women's Basketball team (6-4 overall, 3-3 MEC) continued its Mountain East Conference schedule today against the Glenville State Pioneers.
The Cardinals led by as many as 22 in the first half thanks to a total team balanced offensive attack. Junior guard
Jaila Bryant led the Cardinals with 13 points and four rebounds in the first half. Junior guard
Breanna Butler added 11 points by making 4 of 6 from field and 3 of 4 from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward
Jaana Motton contributed eight points and seven rebounds. Freshman guard
Mariah Callen finished the first half with seven points and three assists.
Glenville State worked hard to pull within 11 points at the 3:00 mark of the first half applying pressure on the press and capitalizing on WJU turnovers. Glenville State was led by senior guard Keyanna Tate in the first half. Tate had eight points and three rebounds for the Pioneers.
But a pair of made foul shots by Bryant and a three-pointer by Butler pushed the lead back to 16 for the Cardinals. Callen hit a pair of three-pointers to put an exclamation point on the first half for the Cardinals. Jesuit went into the intermission up by 19, 46-25.
Glenville State tried to trap at the top of the arc to start the second half. The move left the wings open in the Pioneer defense. Sophomore guard
Kylie Frizell and Butler made the Pioneers pay with a pair of three-pointers that stretched the Cardinals' lead to 52-28.
Glenville State went on a 16 to 4 run, bringing the lead to 56-44 with 11:32 left in the game. The Pioneers would pull within 10 points with 9:07 left to play.
But, the Cardinals rose to the occasion to put an end to any momentum created by Glenville State. A pair of layups by Motton and a three-pointer by Butler brought the lead back to 15 for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals hit their foul shots down the stretch to win going away. Final Score – Wheeling Jesuit 80 Glenville State 59.
Butler finished the game as WJU's leading scorer. Butler hit 7 of 10 field goals and 5of 7 three-pointers to post 19 points and two rebounds.
Four other players finished the game in double digits.
Jaila Bryant finished with 16 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Frizell added 15 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Callen finished with 14 points, six assists, and three rebounds. Finally, Motton had 12 rebounds and 12 points, the only double double of the day.
The Wheeling Jesuit Women's Basketball team goes on the road for two games next week in the Mountain East Conference. On Tuesday, Jesuit travels to West Virginia Wesleyan for a 5:30 pm start. Then on Saturday November 17
th, the Cardinals face Shepherd University away. The victory brings the Jesuit Women's Basketball overall record to 7-4 and 4-3 in the Mountain East Conference.
