WJU Softball Goes 1-3 on Weekend

BUCKHANNON & GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit softball team dropped three straight games, but finished their four-game tour through the central part of the state with a solid 7-2 victory over Glenville State college.
 
The Cardinals started the weekend's play at West Virginia Wesleyan, dropping game one against the Mountain East's first-place team in the double header 11-0, and game two 3-1. WJU then hit the road to Glenville where the Cards split with the Pioneers, losing 4-3 in game one, but bouncing back to take game two 7-2.
 
The Cardinals now move to 11-18 on the season and 5-7 in MEC conference play and now sit in 9th place in the conference standings.
 
In the opening game of weekend series, WJU pitcher Erika Jusko was shelled early on, giving up three runs in the second inning on a solo homer, a triple, and an RBI on a fielders choice single.
 
The Bobcats piled on four more runs in both the 5th and 6th inning, including a three-run homer in the bottom of the 4th to go up 11-0, ending the game early with a more-than 10 run lead in the 5th.
 
Cardinal pitcher Ali Smith held the Bobcats to just three runs on six hits in throwing a complete seven innings in the evening game. WJU again fell behind 3-0 in the 2nd inning and couldn't climb out of the hole despite tallying six hits. The lone Cardinal run came in the top of the 4th when a Marla Small double drove in Caity Ferrell who was pinch running for Erika Jusko who was on base with a single. Final score 3-1 in favor of the Bobcats.
 
WJU then traveled to Glenville to face the Pioneers in a Sunday double header. The Cardinals ran out to a 3-0 lead after three innings, but the Pioneers tied the game in the 4th with a three-run inning and score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 6th leading to a 4-3 victory.
 
The Cards scored their first run in the first inning when Jarah Ice came in to score on a past ball. Ice scored again in the 3rd inning for the Cards when Kelsi Thompson singled, followed by an Angie Reddick single that drove Thompson in to put WJU up 3-0.
 
Ali Smith pitched another complete game for the Cardinals, and pitched a shut out until the 4th inning when GSC's Kayleigh Huck hit a solo shot to close the gap 3-1. Once batter later, the Pioneers' Morgan Scarpellini hit a two run homer to tie the game 3-3.
 
The game remained at a draw until the 6th when Glenville sealed the win with an RBI double to go ahead 4-3 for the win.
 
A big four-run 3rd inning in game two gave the Cardinals the break they needed to pick up the win to end the series. Lorian Tharp led the Cardinals, going 4-4 at the plate and coming in to score twice. 
 
WJU trailed 2-1 heading into the 3rd, with the Card's single run coming from Tharp on a Jusko single. The bats then came alive when Angie Reddick singled and drove in Ice, and advancing Thompson to third. Tharp then drove Thompson in on another single. The inning wrapped up when Jusko slammed a triple for two RBIs, brining in Reddick and Tharp.
 
The Cardinals added two more runs in the 4th when Tharp again singled brining in Ice and Victoria Vuljannic to put WJU up 7-2, where the score would stay till the end of the game.
 
Erika Jusko pitched all seven innings for the Cards, allowing only 5 hits and two runs while tallying five strikeouts.  
 
The Cardinals return to the diamond on Tuesday for a non-conference double header against Seton Hill starting at 3:30pm.
