Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WJU Softball Drops Two, Takes 11th Seed In Playoffs

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit softball squad dropped a Mountain East Conference double header to the Fairmont State Falcons on Sunday, falling 2-7 in game one, and 3-7 in game two.

The Cardinals finish the regular season with a 9-19 conference record (16-31 overall), which earns them the No. 11 seed heading into the MEC playoffs.

In game one of the double header, the Cardinals actually picked up more hits than the Falcons, getting on base eight times compared to FSU's five. It was errors however that was the Cardinals undoing, with six separate fielding errors in game one.

WJU got on the board first in the third inning when Rachel Conrad singling to left center, bringing in Jarah Ice for an RBI. FSU brought in four runs in the top of the 4th though, including a two-run homer to put the Falcons ahead for good in the game.

It was clear the breaks weren't going the Cardinals way when, in the top of the 7th inning, the Falcons Carly Mundie hid a deep fly to center field. As WJU's Victoria Vuljanic moved back to the warning track to make the out, the ball bounced off the palm of her mitt and over the center field wall for a two run home run that was scored as an error. The tough break for Vuljanic led to the 2-7 loss for WJU.

The Cardinals fell victim to a slow start in game two, falling behind 4-0 after two innings.

Again, the WJU bats were working, with the Cardinals racking up eight hits, but the Cardinals again suffered four handling errors, allowing FSU to drive in a 7-3 win.
