Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit softball team used some extra inning heroics and a bit of luck to defeat the Atlantic Region's No. 9 University of Charleston in game two of a Mountain East Conference double header on Wednesday to split the series with a 2-6 loss in game one, and 2-1 win in game two.
WJU dedicated the double header to Hines Rotriga, a Wheeling area two-year old diagnosed with neuroblastoma, and brother of WJU softball first basemen
scoring from third on a nicely placed bunt down the left field line from
Jarah Ice. Ice ran out the throw to first, and the Cardinals took the 1-0 lead in the 2
nd inning.
The lead didn't last long however, with the Golden Eagles scoring six runs in a row before got on the board again in the bottom of the 7
th. That run came when
Lorian Tharp hit a sac fly out to left field and
Ali Smith tagged up on third to advance home bringing the score to 6-2. That is where the scoring stopped for WJU however, and UC took the win in game one.
Game two was much tighter with both teams remaining off the scoreboard until the 4
th inning when Charleston took the 1-0 lead on a fielding error by second baseman
Skylar Berger.
WJU tied the game in the bottom of the same inning however when
Morgan Stohlman punched an RBI single to right-center driving in
Lorian Tharp for the tying run.
The game remained a pitchers dual till the end of regulation, with WJU's
Ali Smith throwing a complete game that included three strike outs.
In the bottom of the 8
th inning, the Cardinals picked up the winning run when
Jarah Ice hit a single to left center that turned into a triple when the ball went scuttling through the defenders legs and back to the outfield wall as Ice rounded the bases for third.
Rachel Conrad sealed the win for WJU when she hit a deep sacrifice fly to right field. Ice tagged up and sprinted home to score the game-winning run for the Cardinals.
WJU will get another shot at climbing the conference table on Senior Day this Saturday when they play host to Shepherd University, who sits one place below the Cardinals in the conference standings.
