Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The Wheeling Jesuit softball team dropped a pair of road games to cross-town rivals, West Liberty on Tuesday, 0-4 in game one, and 5-7 in game two.
The losses keep the Cardinals near the bottom of the MEC table in 11
th place with a 7-15 conference record (14-27 overall), one spot above the conference cellar dwellers, West Liberty.
In game one,
Ali Smith was productive for the Cardinals both on the mound and in the batters box, picking up three hits in three at bats, singling through the left side each time.
Smith also pitched a complete game through six innings for the Cardinals, giving up four earned runs and taking two strikeouts facing 26 batters.
Smith couldn't do it alone however, and the Cardinals dropped the game 0-4.
The WJU bats came alive in a big way in the 3
rd inning of the second game, when the Cardinals exploded for all five of their runs.
The scoring for the Cards started when
Angie Reddick hit a three-run triple to right field, driving in
Lorian Tharp,
Morgan Stohlman, and
Jarah Ice to put WJU up 3-2. The next batter for WJU,
Marla Small then singled up the middle driving in Reddick and the Cardinals increased the lead.
WJU's final run came when
Rachel Conrad singled through the left side to bring in Small and the Cardinals bumped their lead to 5-2 heading into the 4
th inning.
The Cardinals held the lead till the bottom of the 6
th inning when West Liberty hit a double and a triple to drive in four runs and regain the lead 5-7 where the game ended, giving WJU the two game loss.
The Cardinals return to action tomorrow when they host Charleston at the JB Chambers I-470 complex.
