Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va. – The weather allowed the Wheeling Jesuit Softball team to finally get back outside again on Monday, splitting a Mountain East Conference double header with West Virginia State with an 8-4 win, and a close 3-2 loss.
The split keeps the Cardinals in the middle of the MEC table at 10-15 overall (4-4 MEC).
The Cardinals went on a scoring bonanza in game one, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the 1
st inning.
Lorian Tharp got WJU on the board first with a big double to center field that brought in
Kelsi Thompson and
Erika Jusko to score. Tharp rounded the bases for home later in the inning when
Marla Small reached base on an error by the left fielder to go up 3-0.
In the 3
rd inning,
Skylar Berger banged a double to right center bringing in Small to add another run, and the Cardinals put an exclamation point on the game in the 4
th inning when
Angie Reddick slammed solo shot over the left field wall to put WJU up 5-1 heading into the final innings of the game.
The Cards finished their scoring in the 5
th when
Dana Achille scored on another WVSU error at third base.
Jarah Ice then doubled to right field driving in
Rachel Conrad and
Morgan Stohlman to put WJU up 8-3. Final sore, 8-4 Cardinals.
Jusko picked up the win for the Cardinals, throwing a complete game allowing 8 hits on the day.
Game two was more of a defensive affair as both teams had trouble finding the gaps. However, it didn't look like it would end up that way in the first inning, with WVSU jumping out to a 2-1 lead on a two-run double from Alana Weyant. The Cardinals lone run in the inning came from
Kelsi Thompson who brought in
Jarah Ice on a on a sacrifice single to third.
In the third inning WJU closed the gap when Reddick hit a double brining in Thompson.
Anna Eggleston kept the Cardinals bats at bay from the mound, picking up the win and only allowing five hits while throwing a complete game. WJU managed to put those bats to ball, but the Yellow Jacket defense held and WVSU took the 3-2 win.
The Cardinals now return to the road for a pair of Mountain East games over WV Wesleyan and Glenville State on April 5
th and 6
th.
