DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS HERE
WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team was able to play its first home games of this cold, wet spring season at the JB Chambers I-470 complex over the weekend, christening the park this year with a 4-0 sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Cardinal's batting was on display throughout the series, putting up 19 runs over the course of the four games in 5-3, 3-2, 6-4, and 5-1 wins. WJU (picked to finish near the bottom of the Mountain East Conference standings) are now sitting in 5
th place in the MEC, not far off the conference leader pace.
While the hitting was solid for WJU, the Cards kept the hearty spectators who braved the cold waiting with anticipation till late in each game before sealing the victories.
In game one, Wesleyan jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the 2
nd inning. WJU wouldn't regain the lead again till the bottom of the 6
th when
Tony Connacher singled up the middle and drove in
Tyler Kowalczyk and
Mitch Ludewig to put the Cards up for good, 5-3.
In the nightcap of Saturday's double-header, WJU basketball and baseball all-rounder
Justin Fritts earned the win on the mound, allowing only three hits and one run in five innings of service.
The Cardinals went ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the 5
th when Joe San Fellipo singled to left field driving in
Adam Young from third. With runners in the corners, San Fellipo took off to steal second base, and the throw down from the catcher was off the mark allowing Conacher to steal home.
Wesleyan would score in the top of the 7
th, but it was too little, too late and the Cardinals hung on for the 3-2 victory.
Runs were easier to come by for the Cards in the first game of day two of the series. WJU had their work cut out for them in this game after Wesleyan jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the 1
st.
Patrick Ammar got the Cards right back in it in the bottom of the inning firing off a solo home run over the left field wall to bring the score to 4-1 Wesleyan.
The Cardinals only picked up one more run before their bats came alive in the bottom of the 6
th when San Fellipo was driven in on a single from
Mitch Ludewig. WJU took the lead for the first time in the game when Young hit a single, driving in Kowalczyk and Ludewig to put the Cards up for good, 6-4.
In the final game of day two, the Cardinals took the lead in the 2
nd inning on a WVWC error, and never looked back. Pinch Hitter
John Linn slammed a single to center field driving in Ludewig and putting Young in scoring position. Pat Ammar was then walked as the bases were juiced to bring in an RBI on the walk, and gave the Cardinals the 5-1 victory.
WJU now heads to Urbana for a mid-week double header in Ohio on Wednesday to try and climb the Mountain East Conference ladder.
