ATHENS, W.Va. – Freshman guard
Chase Lawson came off the bench and drained 22 points to spark a 12 point come-from-behind, 88-82 overtime victory on the road against Concord on Saturday.
The win is the Cardinals sixth straight, putting them in control of their own fate heading into the business end of the season in 6
th place in the conference. WJU now sits at 12-8 (10-7 MEC) having just picked up three road wins, and now returns home for two straight in the coming week.
"We really gutted it out tonight, that's the best way to describe it," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. We had a lot of guys step up tonight. We didn't have the greatest game, but we were able to grind out the win, and make plays when we needed to."
The Cardinals found themselves down by 10 at the half with their usual standouts suffering an off night. The player who has been on the court more than any other in the county,
Eric Siefert, had just four points, leaving the door open for others to step up.
Luckily for WJU, the young guns were able to step up to fill the gaps, and fill the gaps they did in a big way.
Lawson led all scorers in the game with his 22 points, going 7-13 from the field including five 3-pointers and five assists. Fellow freshman
Kyle Ritz had 12 points and was a rebound away from another double-double with nine.
The team's lone senior
Andre Harris also had a big night with 21 points. Both Harris and Lawson led all other scorers in the game with a combined 43 points.
"We're feeling pretty confidant right now," added Sancomb. "We're headed back home for a couple of games, and hopefully we can keep the momentum going."
WJU gets a day off then hits the court again on Monday against non-conference foe Bluefield State College at 7:30pm.
On Thursday, the Cardinals will have a chance to climb the conference ladder when Fairmont State visits the McDonough Center. Wheeling Jesuit will honor their 94 Student Athletes who made the Dean's List in the fall semester at halftime of the game.
