Wheeling, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball team took the court Saturday against the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan University. The contest began at 2 p.m. in Buckhannon, West Virginia. The two teams met earlier in the season in Wheeling where WJU won 70 to 54.
The Bobcats came out of the gate hot, scoring the first five points of the game. WJU responded quickly, tying the game at 10. The Cardinals went on to take an eight point lead, by a score of 20 to 12.
The two teams continued to battle back and forth throughout the first half. The largest lead of the half was eight points, held by the Cardinals. When the clock struck zero, Wheeling Jesuit led West Virginia Wesleyan 32 to 27.
Jaila Bryant led all scorers with 13 points at the half.
The second half proved to be different from the first. WJU came out of the break hot, scoring eight consecutive points, stretching the lead to 13. The Cardinals managed to hold their lead. WJU went on to win by a score of 69 to 59. The WJU bench managed to outscore the Wesleyan bench 22 to 12.
"I thought we came out and played very well, following the emotional win against Glenville," said Wheeling Jesuit women's head coach
Debbie Buff. "We buckled down and did what he had to do."
With this win, WJU secures a winning season, and a guaranteed home playoff game in the Mountain East Conference basketball championship.
Breanna Butler led the Cardinals with a game high 21 points. Butler also grabbed 10 rebounds, securing her double-double.
Jaana Motton turned in 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Bryant added 13 points.
With their win, the Cardinals improve to 14-11 on the year, and 11-9 in the MEC.
The Cardinals will be back in action next Saturday, March 1, when they travel to West Liberty University. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., with the men's game to follow.
