Cardinal Women Fall to Falcons

Box Score FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's hoops team's four game win streak came to a close on Thursday, dropping a 72-66 contest on the road at Fairmont State.

The loss puts the Cardinals back down to 2-4 in the Mountain East, and 5-6 on the season overall. WJU trailed by about 10 points for most of the evening before closing the gap in the final minutes, without the services of one of their most prolific scorers, Tankea Lewis who out with an ankle injury sustained last week against Concord.

Despite a solid effort from the Cardinals down low, where they outrebounded the Falcons 26-24, and outscored FSU 30-22 with points in the paint, Fairmont shot 56% from the floor and had 25 points from Makenzie White to pull away with the win.

"I actually thought we fought really hard tonight and it was a good game for us," said WJU head coach Debbie Buff. "We had a few careless turnovers, so if we took care of the ball a bit more it might have been different. I told the girls after the game I was happy with our effort considering we outrebounded them."

Turnovers were indeed a factor with WJU committing 24 on the night.

Leading for WJU was Jaila Bryant who put up 17, followed closely by Breanna Butler who had 11 points. Janna Motton provided some spark off the bench for the Cards going 5-6 for 10 points and leading the team with 5 rebounds.

The Cardinals hit the road again on Saturday when they will take on the MEC's #1 team, Glenville Sate who are ranked 12th in the country in the most recent Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA)/USA Today Sports Division II Top 25 Poll.
