Wheeling Jesuit Women’s Soccer Hammers Lady Hawks

Box Score
WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit Women's soccer team faced the Lady Hawks of Chowan University Sunday morning for the Cardinals second match of the year.  The match held historical significance as it was the last sporting event ever to be held at WJU's James LaRosa stadium before construction starts on the school's new athletic facility.

The Cardinals sent the old facility out with a bang too, scoring 8 goals in a dismantling of Murfreesboro, North Carolina's Chowan University. WJU was led by Captain, #18 Jessie Vilkofsky who had three goals on the day for a hat trick.

Wheeling Jesuit controlled the ball from the get go, holding possession for most of the first half.  Chowan rarely ventured into the Cardinal half of the field, and found themselves on the defensive more often than not. WJU racked up a 21-1 shots-on-goal advantage in the first half alone.

The Cardinals turned that possession into points after 20 minutes when #16 Aliya Kureishy received a cross assist from #6 Brittany DeCapio and hit the back of the net for the opening score of the match.

Then, as the first half drew to a close, the floodgates opened and the Cardinals added three more goals in five minutes.

At the 40 minute mark Vilkofsky nailed the first of her 3 goals with a great individual breakaway behind the defense. Four minutes later #10 Aubrey Hutchinson beat the goalie, then a minute later #7 Caitlin Tomczyk finished the scoring for the half, giving the Cards a 4-0 advantage.

Early in the second half, it didn't take long for the Cardinals to pick up were they left off before the break.

Aubrey Hutchinson, added her second goal of the day from long range after just 8 minutes to give WJU the 5-0 lead. Vilkofsky then added two more goals to complete her hat trick. Finishing off the scoring for the Cards was #13 Maria Tennant who took a cross kick and deposited it in the back of the net to bring the final score to 8-1 for the Cardinals.

After the match, WJU Head Coach Carrie Hanna said of the lopsided victory: "I'm pleased with our performance today. We really played well together. If we can stay focused, and put in thhat same performance this year we'll be OK. We just need to focus on the little things."

Up next for the Cardinals is Ohio Dominican at home on Friday the 13th. The match will be played on WJU's Emily LaRosa field due to construction on the school's new athletic facility.
