Jesuit Women's Soccer Wins 2-1 in Defensive Struggle

Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team hosted the Concord University Mountain Lions at Emily LaRosa Field on Saturday.  The game started off evenly matched, but the Cardinals picked up their intensity led by junior Allison Geary and ended up with a 2-1 win.

According to Coach Hannah "the team is very happy with their two most recent outcomes, a winning record in conference play and our focus is to keep moving forward."

The Cardinals came in with a record of 3-5 while their opponent was at 3-3-1. The game began with a defensive battle with goalies Holly Kraus for the Cardinals and Kaitlyn Wasylko for the Mountain Lions not letting any balls past them. In the 27th minute of the first half, junior forward Allison Geary of the Cardinals gave her team the lead as she snuck a ball past Wasylko. Freshmen defender Sydney Lavengood assisted Geary's goal. The rest of the first half ended with yet another defensive battle as the teams went to the break with Wheeling leading 1-0.

One minute into the second half, Wheeling was carded twice. The first card resulted after Kristin Eaton pulled multiple jerseys, shortly followed by a second card to the bench for arguing the call. Just five minutes later, junior defender Abby Barber of the Mountain Lions evened the score when she was given a feed from freshmen forward Emily Cole.  Barber found the back of the net.

The game yet again became a defensive battle until the 71st minute mark when the Cardinals were awarded a free kick.  WJU's Jillian Mesaros crossed a ball into the box where Allison Geary was able to head the ball towards the back of the net for her second goal of the game.  At the 75th minute mark Caitlin Tomczyk was given a yellow card for foul play.  The last twenty minutes of the game ended once again as a defensive battle.  As the final buzzer sounded, the Cardinals had a 2-1 victory and advanced their record to 4-5 on the season and 3-2 in the Mountain East Conference.
