The Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals went 2-0 on the opening day of the 8-team, Mountain East Conference (MEC)/Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover volleyball invitational on Saturday night, co-hosted by WJU and West Liberty.
Wheeling Jesuit University's Alma Grace McDonough played host to Slippery Rock University, Kutztown University, Fairmont State University and the hometown Cardinals. The Hilltoppers hosted the University of Charleston, Shippensburg University, and Edinboro University.
The McDonough Center played host to the tournament's first game of the day when Slippery Rock University took to the court against the Fairmont State Falcons. Slippery Rock came into the day with a record of 5-3 whereas Fairmont State came in at a solid 7-1. Fairmont took set 1 25-19, but the story wasn't the same in the second set when Slippery Rock came back with a 25-22 win of their own and then surged on to a 25-14 win in the third set to go up 2 games to 1. Fairmont State picked it up in the fourth set with a 25-16 score to even the win count at two games apiece. In an extremely close fifth and final set the Falcons took home the first win of the tournament 15-11.
In the second game of the day the Fairmont State Falcons took on the Kutztown University Golden Bears. Fairmont State took set 1 of the game 25-20. When all was looking good for Fairmont State the Golden Bears of Kutztown got back into the match with two set wins of their own at 25-22 and 25-17. In the fourth and final set the Golden Bears took home their first win of the tournament and sent the Falcons to a 1-1 record with a final score of 25-20.
Wheeling Jesuit finally got on the court and took on Slippery Rock University. The Cards came in with a record of 6-3 while Slippery Rock was already 0-1 in the tournament and held a record of 5-4. Wheeling controlled the game from the beginning and never looked back winning in three straight sets 25-15, 25-8, and 25-13.
Emma Schleucher led the Cardinals with 12 kills while
Jenna Pew led in assists with 18. The Lady Cardinals recorded a total of 9 team blocks while Slippery Rock was left blank in that category.
WJU took care of business in an equally impressive fashion against Kutztown running out to a 3-0 win. The Cardinals were led again by Schleucher who had 9 kills, proving her worth as last week's MEC conference player of the week.
