Box Score WHEELING W.Va.--The Wheeling Jesuit University Men's Soccer Team kicked off against, the #8 ranked, Notre Dame College Saturday afternoon at the Emily LaRossa Field. It was the first ever match for both schools as members of the new Mountain East Conference.
Notre Dame came out strong, but Jesuit battled back with just as much force keeping the ball between eighteens. Then in the 5
th minute Notre Dame's keeper Jan Skorupinski misjudged a chip shot as the ball floated over his head and towards the empty net. Then seemingly out of nowhere a defender swooped in and booted the ball well over the net and keeping the score at 0-0.
After a series of some controversial and heated calls which gave Notre Dame free kicks within scoring distance. The Falcons put 3 shots on target and well placed all to be foiled by great saves from
Cody Thompson the Cardinals goalie.
As the half went on it was evident to see the Cardinals getting frustrated with not only the calls, but also their own flow of play. Notre Dame tried to capitalize on this opportunity but failed to do so with shots going well over or wide. The Falcons seemed reluctant to change their playing style when after numerous attempts to play long balls from defense straight to offense, did not earn them any points on the board
The second half started off with a quick goal for the Cardinals. Only 30 seconds into the half Captain
Luke Roan lofted a cross to number 11
David Healy who had a powerful volley into the back of the net, passed Skorupinski.
The game continued to be back and forth for both teams with the Falcons making three amazing attempts. The first from number 9 Renan Troccoli who dribbled past multiple Cardinal defenders and ripped a shot just wide. Followed closely in a tightly marked cluster in front of the keeper number 8 had a laser of a header deflected by WJU's Thompson and rebounded by the Falcons 24 Adam Mitchell who laced the ball where a diving
Cody Thompson got a hand on the ball to keep the score 1-0.
Jesuit came right back with opportunities of their own with two back to back break away's with gallant shots just to be deflected by Notre Dames keeper Daniel Nagy.
With 16 minutes left of regular play Reymar Klochko-khoo of Notre Dame headed a ball past Thompson which sparked a scuffle in front of the net with all 22 fielded players getting involved. The next few minutes proved to be very physical with both teams attacking the players as opposed to the ball.
As the final few minutes were winding down Adam Mitchell for Notre Dame took a shot that was deflected by Thompson Mitchell was able to get his own rebound and aim for the far side of the net past the Cardinals lifting the Falcons 2-1.
Jesuit pushed hard for a last second goal but to no avail. #8 ranked Notre Dame is now 4-0 on the season, while Wheeling Jesuit fell to 1-2-1. Jesuit next, travels to Urbana University on September 18
