Cardinals Drop Physical Encounter with Notre Dame College

Box Score WHEELING W.Va.-- Wheeling Jesuit University hosted The Notre Dame College Falcons on Saturday evening at the Emily LaRossa Stadium. It was both teams' first match ever as part of the new Mountain East Conference.

Four minutes into the conference match Notre Dame's #4 Natalie Ockunzzi capitalized on a turn over at half field and dribbled through Jesuits half and took a shot from the right side of the box putting the ball past the Cardinal goalie Carley Kordas.

This early goal was an eye opener for the Lady Cards who stepped up their game and really focused on quality and productive passes.

The rest of the half went by with no change on the board. Both teams had shots and attacks deep into the other half, but neither could make headway. Notre Dame went into halftime with the lead of 1-0.

The second half started off extremely physical and only escalated as time counted down. The Falcons drew the first of many yellow cards to be given during the second half. The violent play didn't slow down when Notre Dame's Melissa Mazzorato was sandwiched between two Jesuit players, resulting in a time stopping injury.

Moments afterwards, Cardinals Senior Captain #3 Jenna Klemkowsky was given a yellow card. Seconds later Stephanie Lorenze also from the Cardinals followed up with a yellow card of her own. This penalty was inside the eighteen resulting in a penalty kick where #26 of the Falcons, Megan O'Connor easily picked the bottom left corner. Raising the Falcons 2-0.

Adding to the penalties #8 Allison Geary racked up another Yellow Card for the Cardinals. Notre Dame realizing the opportunity at hand took it to their advantage and put a quick goal in the net. The assist came from #4 Natalie Ockunzzi right to the foot of Freshman #21 Alex Defilippo.

The game ended with an impressive 39 fouls, 4 yellow cards, and a rough inter conference loss for the Cardinals who fell 3-0 in the match and 1-3 on the season. The Lady Cardinals head to Urbana University on September 18th to battle for their second win of the season.
