Cardinals Pounced by Panthers

Box Score The Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team played host to the visiting Ohio Dominican Panthers early Friday evening. Wheeling Jesuit was trying to improve on their 1-1 record against a hungry Panthers squad. In the end, the Panthers were hungry enough, taking home a 3-0 victory. The game was played at the Emily La Rosa soccer field due to the construction going on the James La Rosa Athletic Complex.

Each team had chances early in the contest with Ohio Dominican goalie Laura Clark making some outstanding saves. Wheeling Jesuit suffered a rough blow in the 33rd minute when Olivia Vanhoose went up for a header and went down with a leg injury. Wheeling Jesuit did have a number of scoring chances near the 30 minute mark, but could not find the back of the net.

The Cards had a scoring chance soon after, but due to a foul, the shot was off. A free kick was then awarded to Jenna Klemkowsky who missed the shot high, and the WJU pressure went waning.

The defensive highlight of the day came just before the half when WJU goalie Carley Kordas made a brilliant one handed, diving save that bounced off the bar, the ground, and off the cross bar again. The crowd held it's breath as Kordas jumped on the loose ball and saved the goal.

In the second half Kordas made another unbelievable save as she came out of the net, one on one with the Panther attacker, and squashed the threat.

The Panthers then struck when Lauren Pratt sniped the Wheeling goalie with an assist from Kethryn Mattingly. Dominican player Madison Baldwin struck again for the Panthers in the 70th minute to increase the Panthers lead to 3-0.

When the clock reached zero the Panthers 9 shots-on-goal compared to the Cardinals 2 told the story, and Dominican walked away with the 3-0 win. The Cardinals record went to 1-2 while the Panthers of Ohio Dominican went to 2-1-1.

WJU Men's and Women's Soccer teams will face off against Notre Dame College on Saturday in both teams first ever Mountain East Conference match.
