Box Score JOHNSTOWN, Pa.---The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team resumed series play on the road at Pointe Stadium against the University of Pitt-Johnstown on Sunday. The Cardinals pounded out 15 hits the 9-inning series finale for a 13-3 rout of the Mountain Cats. With the win, Jesuit improved to 7-12 in WVIAC play and 10-20 overall while UPJ fell 17-13 overall and 8-10 in league play.
The Cardinals opened the game with a run for a 1-0 advantage after the first inning.
Jordan Kraus opened the game with a double to left field, and
Patrick Ammar recorded a RBI with a base hit to right field. After holding UPJ scoreless, the Cardinals added four more runs to the scoreboard. Tim Geibel led-off with a single through the left side while
Tyler Kowalczyk and
Shaun Gutkin earned two-out walks. Next, Kraus blasted a bases clearing double for three RBI, and scored moments later when
Cory Wickham singled to centerfield.
The Cardinals' offense continued to increase the lead as
Robbie Davia tripled to lead-off the third inning and scored on a sacrifice fly out to right field by Geibel. In the fourth inning, Kowalczyk singled and scored on Kraus' third double in as many at-bats. The following inning Geibel sent a deep fly ball out of the park for two RBI and a 9-0 Cardinal lead.
The Mountain Cats cut into the Cardinals' nine-run advantage with three runs in the fifth inning, but Jesuit responded with four runs in the seventh inning.
Corey Hull started the rally with a single to centerfield, and
Mitch Ludewig followed with a single to right field. Kowalczyk reached base on a fielder's choice to load the bases, and an error by the UPJ catcher plated Hull. Kraus followed with an RBI fielder's choice while Wickham and Ammar collected the final two RBI – Wickham singled to right field.
Kraus, WJU pitcher, earned the win with five innings of work, and
Garrett Sancomb recorded the save in four scoreless innings on the mound. Kraus scattered eight hits, three runs, and two walks with one strikeout while Sancomb allowed six hits.
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action Tuesday, April 9 at the JB Chambers I-470 Complex against the University of Charleston. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
