Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit softball team split a doubleheader with Seton Hill University on Saturday afternoon at the JB Chambers I-470 Complex. The Cardinals convincingly won the opener 19-6 and dropped game two 7-4 in extra-innings. Jesuit moves to 4-2 in WVIAC play and 11-15 overall while Seton Hill is 3-3 in league play and 4-8 overall.
In game one, the Cardinals established a 4-1 lead after the first inning. SHU opened with a run when a lead-off double scored after a bunt and a WJU fielding error. Jesuit responded with four runs on three hits and a hit by pitch.
Lorian Tharp started the offense with a single to centerfield.
Erika Jusko followed with a RBI double to right field to plate the first run. After
Aleecia Sunagel was hit by a pitch,
Angie Reddick blasted a 3-run homerun over the right centerfield fence.
Wheeling Jesuit extended the lead by four runs in the second inning on four hits, 8-1.
Jarah Ice opened the inning with a base hit to right field, and after stealing second and third, Tharp drove her in with a double to left centerfield.
Erika Jusko was hit by a pitch, and Reddick recorded two more RBI on a single to centerfield.
Skylar Berger followed with a RBI double to centerfield to plate the Cardinals eighth run.
The Griffins cut into the Cardinals' lead in the third inning by scoring five runs on three singles, two doubles and a WJU fielding error. WJU got one run back in the bottom half of the third inning when
Ali Smith singled and scored on a Tharp double to left centerfield. Jesuit held the Griffins scoreless in the fourth inning, and the Cardinals' offense exploded for 10 runs to put the game away. Reddick and Berger started the scoring outburst with back-to-back singles, and Berger recorded an RBI. A Griffin fielding error followed and
Rachel Conrad blasted a single to load the bases. Ice and Tharp delivered RBI singles, and Jusko plated two runs with her single to left centerfield. Sunagel cleared the bases and picked up three RBI with a big fly ball over the left field fence.
Reddick and Berger started the rally again as Reddick singled and Berger doubled.
Victoria Vuljanic plated Reddick with a single and Smith had the final RBI on a groundout to second base.
Ashley Nichols earned the complete game victory, scattering seven hits and three earned runs with two strikeouts.
Game two needed extra-innings to decide the winner. Jesuit started the scoring in the second inning when Reddick blasted a solo-homerun over the left field fence. The Griffins tied the game in the fourth inning, but Jesuit regained the lead with two runs. Sunagel led-off the inning with a double to centerfield and Reddick walked. After two fly outs Smith doubled to right field to plate both runs. The Griffins added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to force extra-innings.
The Griffins threatened to score in the ninth inning, placing runners at second and third with no outs. After two pop-ups and an intentional walk, the Cardinals escaped with a putout at third base. In the tenth inning, the two teams entered the international tiebreaker rules, which the last out made is placed at second base. The Griffins took full advantage of the situation, scoring four runs on three singles and two walks. Jesuit responded with a run, but left one stranded to end the game.
Jusko received the hard extra-inning loss in 9.1 innings of work while allowing 17 hits, five earned runs, three walks and six strikeouts.
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action on Sunday, April 7 at the JB Chambers I-470 Complex against Shepherd University. First pitch is scheduled at 12 p.m.
