Box Score 2 JOHNSTOWN, Pa.---The Wheeling Jesuit baseball team split a WVIAC doubleheader with University of Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals dropped the opener 5-3 and bounced back to win game two 4-2. The Cardinals moved to 6-12 in WVIAC play and 9-20 overall while UPJ is 8-9 in league play and 17-12 overall.
The Mountain Cats started the scoring in the first inning as the lead-off batter singled to left field and the two-hitter blasted a homerun to right field for a 2-0 advantage. The Mountian Cats added two runs in the second inning and one in the fifth inning before Jesuit touched the plate, 5-0. In the seventh inning, WJU attempted a comeback as
Corey Hull reached on a UPJ fielding error,
Mike Garman walked and
Cullen Hinderliter was hit by a pitch. Hull scored on a wild pitch and pinch hitter
Michael Adams recorded the Cardinals' first RBI with a single to right field.
Cory Wickham hit into a fielder's choice to plate the Cardinals' third run, but the comeback fell short on a groundout to the UPJ shortstop.
WJU pitcher, Tony Acierno, went the distance allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
In game two, WJU established the early lead as Jesuit touched the plate three times in the second inning. Tim Geibel started the rally with a single to left field, and
Tyler Kowalczyk followed with a RBI double to right field.
Mitch Ludewig singled to centerfield to place runners at first and third, and
Patrick Biega placed a single in the same spot for a RBI.
Jordan Kraus ended the run a sacrifice fly out to right field.
The Mountain Cats responded with a run in the fourth inning, and Jesuit answered in the sixth inning. Kowalczyk singled to start the inning and Kraus drove him across the plate with a single to right field. UPJ added a run in the final inning, but it wasn't enough to steal the game from the Cardinals.
WJU pitcher,
Parker Lang, earned the game two win and
Justin Fritts collected the save. Lang scattered six hits and one earned run while walking one batter and striking out four. Fritts allowed one run, one hit and one walk while striking out three batters.
Wheeling Jesuit will complete the three-game series on Sunday, April 7 at Point Stadium in Johnstown, Pa. The 9-inning contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.
