Box Score WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit women's lacrosse team played host to Urbana University on Wednesday afternoon and used a late scoring drive to secure a 9-8 victory at the James LaRosa Complex. Senior
Molly Parker rattled the cage with the game-winning goal with 25 seconds left in regulation. With the win, the Cardinals improved to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) while the Blue Knights fell to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in GLIAC play.
The Blue Knights started the scoring when Emily Boerger connected with back-to-back goals to give Urbana a 2-0 advantage by the 20:15 mark. The Cardinals fired back with a goal at 15:55 as Allie Fetty netted an unassisted shot. At 13:25, Urbana found the cage again for a 3-1 lead, but Jesuit answered 17-seconds later when Christina Bass received a pass from
Kaitlyn Boyd. Bass finished the shot to bring the Cardinals within one goal at 3-2. Urbana increased the lead to two goals, again, as Boerger completed a hat trick. The two teams traded a pair of goals before the half ended, and the Blue Knights held a 6-4 halftime advantage. WJU's
Jessie Tufnell scored both of the Cardinals goals to end the first period, and Fetty added an assist on the final shot.
Jesuit opened the second half with three unanswered goals to take a 7-6 lead by the 17:31 mark. The Fetty and Tufnell duo started the run as Fetty found Tufnell, who finished the hat trick.
Shelby McClure and
Sara Fitzsimon followed with unassisted goals at 23:47 and 17:31, respectively. The Blue Knights tied the game, 7-7, with another Boerger score, however, the Cardinals responded with a goal by Fetty, and this time, Tufnell was on the assist. With 8:42 left to play, Urbana tied the game for the final time, 8-8, which setup the late game heroics by WJU's Parker.
The Cardinals kept possession of the ball for the final 3:26 seconds, calling a pair of timeouts during the span. The final timeout was taken with 1:10 left to play, and Jesuit worked the ball around to get a shot. With 45-seconds left on the clock, Wheeling Jesuit reset the ball behind the net and began running another offensive set. Parker made her way to the left side of the cage and Tufnell found her with a pass from behind the cage. Parker received the pass and without hesitation ripped the game-winning shot into the twine. The Cardinals won the ensuing draw, melting 25 seconds off the clock for their first GLIAC win.
Jesuit held a slight 34-32 advantage in ground balls as Bass and Tufnell led the Cardinals with six pick-ups apiece. Fitzsimon and
Erin Underwood followed with four ground balls each while Parker and
Stephanie Katona each had three.
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action on Saturday, April 5 at the James LaRosa Complex against Alderson-Broaddus College. First draw is scheduled for 4 p.m.
