Box Score 2 ATHENS, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit softball team split a West Virginia Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader with Concord University on the road Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (20-26, 13-13 WVIAC) opened the day with a 7-4 victory, however, the Mountain Lions bounced back to claim a 5-1 win in the finale.
The Cardinals established an early lead in game one after
Lorian Tharp singled and
Erika Jusko blasted a two-run homerun. A Concord fielding error landed
Angie Reddick on first base, and
Skylar Berger took full advantage with a single to right field.
Ali Smith followed with an RBI-double down the left field line. Jesuit led 4-0 after the first inning.
Concord responded with a run in the second inning on a pair of singes and a RBI groundout. The Mountain Lions cut the lead in half in the fourth on a pair of doubles, but Jesuit added three insurance runs. In the sixth inning, Reddick led-off with a base hit and scored on a fielder's choice, and in the seventh, a single by
Aleecia Sunagel started the final rally. Reddick blasted a RBI double to right centerfield to plate Sunagel. Smith followed with a RBI double to bring Reddick across home plate.
Concord responded with a single and two doubles for two runs, but Jesuit pitcher
Ashley Nichols retired the next three batters. Nichols earned the complete game victory, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out three batters.
In game two, Sunagel lifted the Cardinals to a 1-0 advantage with a solo homerun. The Mountain lions responded with five runs in the fifth inning, and Jesuit couldn't recover. Jusko received the loss, hurling 4.2 innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits and four walks. Nichols pitched the final 1.1 innings, scattering three hits for two runs with a walk and strikeout.
Wheeling Jesuit is scheduled to travel to Cedarville, Ohio for a non-conference doubleheader against Cedarville University on Tuesday, April 30. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
