Charleston, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit softball team split a doubleheader on the road against conference opponent, the University of Charleston. The Cardinals won the opening game 2-0 before falling in the nightcap by a score of 5-0. With the split, WJU moved to 3-1 in WVIAC play and 10-14 overall while the Golden Eagles are 3-3 in league play and 12-13 overall.
WJU pitcher,
Ashley Nichols, hurled the complete game shutout and limited the Golden Eagles to just four hits. Nichols faced 26 batters allowed no walks and recorded three strikeouts.
The Cardinals scored two runs on five hits in game one. Jesuit plated the first run in the second inning as
Skylar Berger singled and
Victoria Vuljanic blasted an RBI double. In the sixth inning, WJU added an insurance run as
Jarah Ice scored on an
Angie Reddick single. Ice reached on a single and
Aleecia Sunagel added a double to round out the Cardinals' offensive effort.
In game two, the Golden Eagles scored five runs on 10 hits while the Cardinals only managed to scatter four hits around the yard. Nichols received the loss. In four innings of work, Nichols faced 18 batters, allowed six hits and three runs with two strikeouts.
Erika Jusko was in relief for the final two innings, allowing four hits, two runs and two walks. Ice,
Lorian Tharp and Vuljanic recorded singles while Reddick doubled.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, April 6 at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Complex against Seton Hill University. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
