Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit softball team played host to the WVIAC's top-ranked team, Glenville State College, on Wednesday afternoon at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Complex. The Cardinals swept the Pioneers by scores of 4-2 and 3-0, respectively. With the wins, Jesuit improved to 8-8 in WVIAC play and 15-21 overall while Glenville State fell to 12-4 in league play and 21-9 overall.
The Cardinals opened the doubleheader with a two-out rally worth four runs. After the first two batters of the game recorded outs for WJU,
Erika Jusko and
Aleecia Sunagel delivered back-to-back singles to start the rally. With runners on first and second,
Angie Reddick was hit by a pitch and
Skylar Berger plated three runs with a double to right centerfield.
Victoria Vuljanic followed with a RBI single to left field, and the Cardinals led 4-0.
From there, the WJU pitching staff took over as starting pitcher Jusko hurled four innings for the win, allowing five hits, two runs and two walks with two strikeouts.
Ashley Nichols recorded the save with three innings of work, scattering two hits, no runs and no walks while striking out one batter.
The Pioneers plated their first run when Morgan Scarpellini blasted a solo homerun in the second inning, and GSC earned their second run on a single by Kate Williams which was followed with a RBI double to left field by Scarpellini.
The Pioneers' pitching staff held Jesuit hitless in the final five innings, however, four runs proved to be enough for the win.
Pitching dominated game two as Nichols earned the complete game shutout victory. The senior from Belle Vernon, Pa. allowed no runs, six hits and one walk while striking out four Pioneers.
The Cardinals ended the scoring silence in the fourth inning on two hits and a WJU fielding error. Jusko reached on an error to lead-off the inning, and GSC threw her out at second base when Sunagel hit into a fielder's choice. Reddick followed with a single to centerfield, and Berger plated the Cardinals first run on a RBI groundout to GSC's shortstop. With two outs, Vuljanic blasted a RBI single to centerfield for a 2-0 WJU advantage. An inning later, the Cardinals added a third run when
Jarah Ice reached on a GSC fielding error, and scored after Jusko singled to right field.
The Pioneers loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but their hopes of a comeback fell short when Berger made a game-changing double play. Berger had to dive to stop a perfectly placed ground ball. She tagged the runner heading to second base and recorded the force out at first base. The pioneers only managed to have one player to reach base during the final inning, and Jesuit froze her at third for the 3-0 victory.
Jusko led the Cardinals' offense in game two with a 2-for-3 and one RBI performance, while Berger finished the day with four RBI and a run scored.
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action on Saturday, April 20 at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Complex against West Virginia Wesleyan College. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
