Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.VA.---The Wheeling Jesuit softball team played host to nonconference opponent the Indiana University of Pa. on Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals fell in a pair of heartbreaking losses by scores of 2-1 and 5-4.
In game one, The Cardinals established a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when
Angie Reddick cleared the playing surface with a homerun to right centerfield. Jesuit held the lead until the sixth inning when IUP plated two runs on three consecutive hits which included a 2-RBI double. The Cardinals attempted to reclaim the lead in the seventh as
Jarah Ice laid down a bunt and stole second base with one out.
Erika Jusko walked, and a wild pitch moved Ice and Jusko to third and second with two outs, but Jesuit couldn't push anymore runs across the plate. Ice and
Skylar Berger led the Cardinals' offense with two singles each.
WJU pitcher,
Ashley Nichols, earned the tough loss. Nichols opened the game by striking out the side and continued to give hitters a seat, finishing the seven-inning campaign with 10 strikeouts. She only allowed four hits and two runs with one walk.
In game two, Jesuit built a 3-0 advantage by the fifth inning. Berger started the scoring in the second inning with a solo-homerun over the centerfield fence. In the third inning,
Lorian Tharp doubled and scored on an
Aleecia Sunagel double. An inning later, Jesuit plated a third run when
Rachel Conrad doubled and Ice drove her across the plate with a double.
In the fifth inning, IUP established a 4-3 advantage on three singles, a homerun and a pair of WJU fielding errors. The Crimson Hawks added an insurance run in the seventh for a 5-3 advantage, and Jesuit gave one final effort to steal the game. Conrad led-off the final frame with a double down the left field line. Tharp followed with a single and stole second base to put the tying run in scoring position. Jusko grounded out to the shortstop to plate Conrad, and Tharp never advanced from third base.
The Cardinals scattered eight hits which included six doubles, a homerun and a single. Conrad and Tharp led WJU with two hits apiece as Conrad recorded a pair of doubles and Tharp had a double and single. Ice, Jusko, Sunagel, added doubles, and Berger homered.
Jesuit pitcher, Jusko, earned the loss with a complete game performance. She allowed 10 hits, three earned runs and five walks with six strikeouts.
