Cardinals Sweep Battlers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PHILIPPI, W.Va.---The Wheeling Jesuit softball team traveled to Philippi, W.Va. for a West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Alderson-Broaddus College on Sunday. The Cardinals swept the battlers, taking game one by a score of 9-2 and winning the nightcap 5-4. With the wins, WJU improved to 6-8 in WVIAC play and 13-21 overall while the Battlers fell to 8-6 in the league and 18-15 overall.
 
Jesuit set the tone early, opening the game with a pair of runs and added a third run in the second inning. Erika Jusko and Aleecia Sunagel started the rally with back-to-back singles when Sunagel earned a RBI as Jusko scored. Angie Reddick followed with a walk, and after a AB fielding error, Victoria Vuljanic blasted a RBI single to centerfield for the Cardinals' second run. The following inning, Rachael Conrad reached on a fielding error, and pinch runner, Sammy Macioce, stole second base and scored on another AB error. The Battlers rallied for two run in the second inning two singles and a pair of walks, but Jesuit led 3-2.
 
In the fourth inning, Sunagel plated four runs with one swing of the bat to give WJU a 7-2 advantage. Conrad and Jarah Ice reached base on fielding errors, and Jusko sent a single into left field to load the bases. With the bases full, Sunagel sent a deep fly ball over the centerfield fence for a bases-clearing grand slam and five-run lead. WJU added a run in the sixth inning and in the seventh for a 9-2 win. Sunagel, Jusko and Reddick led the Cardinals' offense, each scattering three hits around the yard. Sunagel was 3-for-4 with two singles, a grand slam, six RBI and two runs scored while Jusko was 3-for-5 a RBI and two runs scored – Reddick was 3-for-4.
 
WJU pitcher, Ashley Nichols, earned the win with six complete innings of work, allowing four hits, one earned run and two walks with six strikeouts.
 
In game two, the Cardinals rallied for five runs in the second inning and held on for a 5-4 victory. Reddick started the rally with a solo-homerun, and four consecutive walks followed. With two outs and the bases loaded, Lorian Tharp blasted a bases-clearing double for three RBI. The Battlers added two runs in the second inning, one in the third and one in the fourth, but Jesuit recorded three up, three down innings in the sixth and seventh to finish the doubleheader sweep.
 
Reddick and Conrad led the Cardinals' offense with two hits apiece. Reddick was 2-for-4 with a single, homerun, RBI and run scored while Conrad was 2-for-2 with a pair of singles, a walk and a run scored.
 
WJU pitchers, Jusko and Nichols, shared the work load as Jusko hurled the initial two innings and received the win while Nichols closed out the final five innings.
 
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action on Tuesday, April 16 at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Complex against Indiana University of Pennsylvania. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
