Box Score 2 INSTITUTE, W.Va. --- The Wheeling Jesuit softball team dropped a doubleheader to West Virginia State University on Wednesday afternoon by scores of 8-0 and 6-5, respectively. The Cardinals slipped to 4-6 in WVIAC play and 11-19 overall while the Yellow Jackets improved to 6-4 in league play and 21-10 overall.
In game one,
Aleecia Sunagel recorded Jesuit's only hit with a single to left field. Sunagel walked in the fourth inning while
Victoria Vuljanic and
Ali Smith reached on a walk and a WVSU fielding error in the fifth inning. WVSU plated three runs in the first inning, two in the third inning and three in the fourth.
Yellow Jackets' pitcher, Kelsey Lorraine, earned the shutout victory, allowing one hit and two walks with five strikeouts while WJU pitcher,
Ashley Nichols, received the loss, scattering eight hits, three earned runs, one walk and one strikeout.
In game two, The Cardinals' offense came alive as Jesuit opened with two runs on two hits and a walk.
Jarah Ice led-off the game with a walk and was moved into scoring position on a
Lorian Tharp sacrifice bunt.
Erika Jusko followed with a homerun, and Sunagel singled to left field. The Yellow Jackets answered with a run, but Jesuit led 2-1 at the end of the first inning.
WVSU tied the game at two runs apiece in the second inning, however, Jesuit reclaimed the lead in the third. The Cardinals plated three runs in the third inning on three hits and two Yellow Jacket fielding errors. Ice started the rally with a double down the left field line, and Tharp reached on an error which scored Ice. Jusko followed with a RBI single, and Sunagel reached on the second error.
Angie Reddick plated the third run on a single to right field. The Yellow Jackets cut into the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning, and the Cardinals led 5-3 after three innings of play.
In the fifth inning, the Yellow Jackets rallied for three runs, taking a 6-5 advantage which proved to be enough to earn the game two victory.
Jusko led WJU's offense with a 3-for-3 effort on two singles, a homerun and a walk while recording three RBI and a run scored.
Wheeling Jesuit will be back in action on Saturday, April 13, traveling to Fairmont, W.Va. for a doubleheader against Fairmont State University. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
